Sonic's Rally at the Courthouse: A Success

Yesterday afternoon, I attended the Save Our Sonics (S.O.S.) rally downtown and met up with fellow bloggers Kevin, James, and Jeff. The thousands of fans dawned Sonics' t-shirts, hats, and old school jerseys, and the small park-like area in front of the courthouse was a sea of green and yellow. The roudy crowd couldn't help but shout chants of "Weasel! Weasel!" when recieving news that Clay Bennett had "weaseled" his way out of the back of the building in order to avoid the mob of angry Sonic supporters.

Some other unforgettable chants included "Hey Clay, No Way!" as well as the ongoing choruses of "Save Our Sonics!" Lorin "Big Lo" Sandretzky, a local celebrity known for being the biggest and most faithful Seattle sports fan, got the crowd going numerous times by shouting "Super!" into the microphone, each time followed by the fans screaming "Sonics!" right back at him.

Other notable speakers included Sacramento Kings' Center and former UW and Seattle Prep basketball star Spencer Hawes, as well as former Sonics' stars Xavier "X-man" McDaniel, and Gary "The Glove" Payton. Payton spoke of Seattle as being the place where he became "one of the best players in the NBA." He also said if he were to go to the Hall of Fame he couldn't imagine himself in a jersey other than a Seattle SuperSonics one.

Some came for the past. Some came for the future. But overall the fans came to show the city and the NBA that Seattle has a great love for NBA basketball that began 41 years ago.
