Will the Sounders be Irrelevant?

Who is not psyched about the Sounders FC and their upcoming inaugural season? Me. I could care less. I hate watching soccer. It is one of the most boring games on the planets to watch. It reminds me of hockey, nascar and golf. Whenever you turn the channel to those sports and you try to concentrate, nothing entertaining happens.

But then, for some odd reason, right when you change the station or turn off the TV something entertaining happens. I'm sorry, but I can't handle watching soccer because it takes forever for one team to score. Soccer is a fun sport to play, but being a spectator sucks.

People can talk all they want about how soccer is the world's most popular sport. But what they didn't know is that basketball is starting to officially prove that statement false. As a traditional sports fan (baseball, football, basketball), I will never be able to connect to soccer the same way I connect to those sports.

It is cool to have a pro team in a professional league. But isn't the MLS a crappy league with crappy players anyways? If I am going to watch soccer, I want to see real skilled pros. I've heard the English premier league is the biggest and most competitive soccer league in the world.

It's too bad the Sounders FC will never be able to replace the Sonics. I have a feeling this buzz is going to die after the first season. The Sounders will have their share of fans and a section in the newspaper, but they'll have a tough time converting casual fans like myself to enjoy watching a game of soccer.

And sure they'll be successful, but their success will never reach the same excitement as the Mariners or the Seahawks are capable of. Their impact may be as much if not a little bit more than the Seattle Storm. Does anyone care at all that they won the WNBA championship in 2004? Will pundits call a Sounders FC MLS cup victory a major championship?

Even David Beckham wasn't that big of a deal in his 1st season. Don't get me wrong, I'm still a Sounders' fan, but I won't get super excited when someone brings it up, because honestly, I don't care.


What's your take on the Sounders? Am I being too arrogant with my views?
