How the Mariners ended up with him:
Cameron was acquired from the Reds when the Mariner traded Griffey back in 2000.
Why we miss him:
Cameron's amazing defense along with his power made him one of the best center fielders in baseball while he was a Mariner. It would be appropriate to label Cameron as an underrated player. I don't think he was recognized enough for his amazing defense. And then there was that one time when Cameron hit four home runs in one game. That was amazing. Although I'd rather have Franklin Gutierrez right now, Cameron would have been a better starting center fielder than Jeremy Reed was back in 2005 and 2006.
Where is he now?
After being granted free agency in 2003, Cameron signed with the New York Mets and had two good seasons there. He was then traded in 2005 to the San Diego Padres. It does not look like he is declining quite yet, but he is reaching his golden years at the age of 36. Cameron is on pace for 26 home runs according to his ZIPs projections. That would be his highest home run total since 2004. He has been in the league for 15 seasons now, and my bet is that he retires soon.
