After shocking O'Dea in 2008 by taking the Metro championship, the Crusaders suffered a tough season in 2009. Several people saw it coming, especially after losing a significant amount of Seniors and being under a new head coach, Jason Gesser. Can this team get themselves back into the playoffs after the disappointment of last year? Certainly.
It will be interesting to see how Gesser runs his offense. Last year the pass was emphasized and the Crusaders had great skill players at the quarterback and wide receiver, but they lose their starting quarterback and two starting receivers for this season.
The one strength of this team is returning starting running back Chevelle Walker (Jr.). "Chevy" can be a game changer, but without a pass game, defenses will be able to key in on him easily.
Defensively they have some skilled players in linebacker Rob Granfelt (Sr.) and safety Jake Springfield (Jr.), but their defensive line remains as a big question mark. With teams that like to run the ball in Seattle Prep and Bainbridge, Eastside's ability to stop the run will be crucial in their playoff chances. Both Prep and Bainbridge ran the ball repeatedly and found success against the Crusaders last season, will this year be any different?
