Championship Saturday is here. One team will emerge victorious and win the prestigious Metro Title. We have seen it all this week, a walk-off homerun, incredible upsets and a miracle inside the park homerun. Everyone thought Seattle Prep was going to run away with this tournament, and look where they’re at now: sitting at home wishing to be in the position these teams playing today are in.
I can already tell you that today you are in for a real treat, whether it be the third place game between O’Dea and West Seattle, or the Metro Championship game between Bishop Blanchet and Eastside Catholic. Will we see another exciting finish like last year? From what I have seen this week, I wouldn’t be surprised. READ OUR PREVIEW FOR BOTH GAMES TODAY AFTER THE JUMP!!
All games are played at Steve Cox Memorial Field
3rd Place Game: (4) O’Dea vs. (1) West Seattle, 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2012 UPSET ALERT
O’Dea: The Irish clearly are the better team in this game and have had great success against West Seattle this year. (Series: 2-0 O’Dea) Sophomore Pierre LeDorze will be on the mound for the Irish tomorrow, who has faced West Seattle twice this year and shut them down in both appearances. O’Dea features a strong lineup; Pierre LeDorze, Scottie Graham, Dylan Wade and Sam Moran are the hottest hitters on the team right now. The Irish are a fastball hitting team and that’s why they were so successful last time they played the Wildcats. With the lack of pitching West Seattle has, the Irish will capitalize on it and win this game, taking third place and a berth to state.
West Seattle: The Wildcats shocked the entire league yesterday with their win over No. 1 ranked Seattle Prep. This team proved that they can hang with the elites of this conference. Their biggest strength this year is their hitting, with Jeff Freeman as their main guy. Unfortunately West Seattle has used up their best pitcher Sam Hellinger yesterday. Not having Hellinger on the mound hurs the Wildcats because after Hellinger they have nobody. If West Seattle wants to win this game, they will need to outhit O’Dea. The Wildcats madness ends tomorrow as they’ll lose and have to play the No. 2 team from KingCo, Lake Washington for a shot at state. Who knows, may third time is charm for West Seattle against O’Dea?
Prediction: O’Dea 8-5
Metro Championship Game: (3) Bishop Blanchet vs. Eastside Catholic (1) 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2012
Bishop Blanchet: The Braves will most likely start one of its top pitchers today, Peter Johnson. Johnson recently threw a shutout against Chief Sealth in the first round of the Metro Playoffs. The Braves are known for their hitting and it showed against Seattle Prep (9-3). Blanchet’s hottest hitters include Connor Celli, Peter Johnson, Josh Larussa and Eric Kimpton. Blanchet’s offense will have a tough time as they face Eastside’s ace Alex Foley. Last time Blanchet faced Foley, they struggled early, but later in that game they were able to hit and score on him, which resulted in a win for the Braves. Blanchet can take this game, I expect their hitting to be strong, but their pitching staff must perform well too. This will be a close one that could go either way, which is why Eastside is on upset alert. However, Eastside has more talent, and I think they’ll win today.
Eastside Catholic: The Crusaders did it and sure proved me wrong. Their hitting was never a problem and that showed in their game against O’Dea. Thanks to big hits from Jeff Kepple (RBI Triple), and Jeff Bohling (walk-off home run). Eastside was lucky to have thrown their ace Alex Foley in early because now they are able to use him today. When Foley is on the hill, it makes the Crusaders even more dangerous. Alex Foley is a lefty pitcher that has great off-speed pitches and a good fastball. Hitting wise for this team, the middle part of the order with Wolgamott, Bohling, Kepple and Meier is a dangerous and will give Blanchet problems. Additionally, when Foley is on the mound, Eastside tends to move Addison Hull up to the leadoff spot. Hull does a great job at getting on base and creating opportunities for his teammates to drive him in. Overall this will be a close game but Eastside prevails and wins a long awaited Metro Baseball Championship.
Prediction: Eastside Catholic 6-4
