Quentin Hakkinen pitched 7 strong innings to lead the Kelso Hilanders to a 7-3 victory over the Bishop Blanchet Braves on Saturday. With the victory, Kelso took 3rd place in the 3A state tournament, while Blanchet took 4th.
Kelso started the game strong against Braves starter Eric Kimpton, plating 2 runs in the 1st inning, thanks to two singles from Nate Grumbois and Cam Johnson.
The score stayed that way until the bottom of the 5th, when the Braves finally put together a rally, getting their first couple hits off Hakkinen. Connor Celli scored from 3rd on an errant throw to 2nd by Hilanders catcher Trevor Feeney to make it 2-1.
Kelso responded right back in the 6th. Cam Johnson laced a 2 RBI triple to left and Taylor Radcliffe added a RBI single, pushing their lead to 5-1.
The Braves wouldn’t go away, however, as they answered with 2 runs of their own, bolstered by a RBI triple by Sam Holberg.
But, time ran out on the Braves, as Kelso tacked on 2 additional runs off of Blanchet reliever Max Schwabe in the 7th to make it 7-3.
Hakkinen allowed a hit, but otherwise shut the door on Blanchet in the bottom of the 7th to secure the victory.
Kelso pounded out 15 hits in the game, while Blanchet managed 7.
