A couple of weeks ago I took a look at Husky recruit Jabari Brown. Ranked one spot ahead of Brown in Scout.com's shooting guard rankings is none other than local phenom and Husky recruit, Tony Wroten Jr. Wroten has had the spotlight on him ever since entering high school. I remember this kid talking him up in my freshman PE class at Seattle Prep. Tony Wroten wasn't even in high school yet, but there was already such a buzz around him.
Scouting Report:
Wroten's pure athleticism and outgoing personality makes him one of the most well-known high school players in the state if not in the nation.
As a player, Wroten is one of the most physically gifted players I have seen in high school. His athleticism and his height combine to make him a force at his position. He can dominate shorter guards and he is lightning quick to maneuver around stronger players. Wroten is a relentless player that can score at will if defenses do not adjust.
Teams that have tried to contain him by forcing him to shoot from the perimeter have found that Wroten has a consistent jump shot that extends to three point range. He isn't afraid to let it fly either. He is confident in his shot, and he'll just put the shot up regardless of whether he is being closely guarded or not.
Potential:
My favorite aspect of Wroten's game is his passing ability. Although he is the first option to score on both Garfield and the Rotary team he plays on, when he passes the ball it is usually crisp and right on target. His court vision is exceptional. Wroten can find his teammates and get passes off cleanly when not expected.
Overall, Wroten's general ability to stay in control and change directions both on offense and defense is impressive. You will rarely see him turn the ball over or commit a stupid foul.
Recruitment:
Wroten currently has eleven offers on the table: Conneticut, Kansas, Kentucky, Syracuse, Tennessee, Villanova, Georgia Tech, Lousiville, Memphis, UNLV, and UW. A recent report has him saying that Kentucky and UW are his finalists. A couple of his buddies are making an effort to ensure that Wroten commits to Kentucky.
Washington has a lot going for them though. Along with being the hometown team, Brandon Roy and several other Garfield graduates have had great experiences playing at UW under Coach Romar. Along with that, Wroten's own dad played football at UW as tight end. And don't forget about Nate Robinson who is Wroten's cousin.
Without a doubt, UW has a lot of connections to Wroten. Will this be enough to trump the national stage that a lot of east coast schools are offering him? That is the main question that will be answered once Wroten makes his decision.
