Not all of the basketball talent in Washington resides in the Seattle metro area. Caleb Dressler from Evergreen high school in Vancouver is a prime example of this. Dressler was ranked No. 14 overall in our Washington high school player rankings back in February. He averaged 17 points, 14.5 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game at Evergreen this past season. We caught up with Dressler to talk about his game and his current recruitment. Check out our interview with him after the jump.
SEATOWN SPORTS: What's your height, weight, and position?
CALEB DRESSLER: 6'10", 236lbs, Center
SS: Describe your game a bit. What do you do well and what are you looking to improve?
CD: "I'm more of a back the basket type of player. I like using the left-handed jump hook over the middle of the key. I was a 50% free throw shooter this past season, so I'm really working to trying to get that up at least 20-30%."
SS: If you could compare your game to one college player or one NBA player, current or former, who would it be, and why?
CD: "I would say I'm kind of like Kevin Love a little bit. He's a really kind of down and dirty player trying to get every board. I think I dunk a little more than him, trying to get up in the air. I don't think I have a jumper as good [as Love] yet, but I would compare myself to him because he goes up there and gets a lot of [offensive] boards and puts them right back up."
SS: So you're mainly a post-player?
CD: "Right now, in AAU, I'm working mainly in the low-post just to show the colleges and scouts a lot of that. When high school season starts coming along I'm going to start to work more on that free-throw line jumper"
SS: Who are you playing for right now?
CD: "I'm playing for ICP out of Portland. 20 minute drive from Vancouver. If I'm not working with my AAU team, I'm working out at my high school, getting shots up, getting ready for the season...Pretty much every other weekend I'll be competing."
SS: What schools have offered?
CD: "San Francisco, Cal Poly, Portland St. have offered scholarships"
SS: And what schools are showing strong interest?
CD: "UW, Oregon, Stanford, WSU, Utah St., a lot of Ivy League schools including Penn and Princeton, Harvard, Columbia"
SS: Any WCC schools in the mix?
CD: "Portland, Santa Clara, Gonzaga, and Pepperdine have all contacted me as well"
SS: What are coaches telling you to do this summer in order to secure some more scholarship offers?
CD: "Just to be a consistent player. Come out every game and really try your hardest and play strong. A lot of them say to just play your game and be in the low post and step out and hit that jumper, but really to just be yourself and be consistent"
SS: Do you have a timetable for your decision?
CD: "I would like to make my decision and commit and sign by the early signing period. ... So I won't really have to worry about it during the season"
