Seatowning: Prince Fielder!

Written by Kevin Cacabelos on .

prince-fielder-boom
  • Where will Prince Fielder land? Jeff Sullivan from SB Nation says these are the teams left in contention: Blue Jays, Cubs, Rangers and the Mariners.
  • If the Mariner Prince Fielder, would he be the biggest free-agent signing in Seattle sports history? Larry Stone from the Seattle Times explores the question at his Hot Stone League. Since 1992, the year I was born, I say yes. The last big signing was Ken Griffey Jr. part two, but his wasn't big for potential impact on the field. Any other bigger signings in Seattle sports history? Drop a line in the comment.
  • While we're on the subject of Prince Fielder, here's Dave Cameron from USS Mariner providing evidence going against the "free-agent magnet" theory.
  • Let's keep the Prince Fielder thing going...his agent Scott Boras put together a cool book about Fielder. Read about the book at Big League Stew.
  • And here's something non-Prince Fielder related. ... Jonathan Givony from DraftExpress wrote up a post for Grantland featuring Terrence Ross on Tuesday. Givony said Ross is, "One of the most physically gifted players in college basketball, Ross is a proficient shooter with NBA range." While Givony mentions his weakness of being an average ball-handler, he doesn't point out Ross' lack of aggressiveness in attacking the rim. Ross has only been to the free-throw line 19 times, which pales in comparison to teammate Tony Wroten's 52 trips to the free-throw line.

Seatowning: Seahawks Keep Winning, Doug Baldwin Is Ballin'

Written by Kevin Cacabelos on .

dougbaldwinSeattle's new star at the wide receiver position, Doug Baldwin.
  • Are you jumping on the Seahawks bandwagon? The Seahawks came out with a decisive 30-13 victory over the lowly Rams on Monday Night Footbal. The team has now won four of its past five games and has an outside shot of stealing a Wild Card playoff spot if they win out. I'll let you read our post-game bullet points, but I want to say that Doug Baldwin has captured the appreciation of the Seahawks fan base. Last night's performance by the undrafted free agent cemented the receiver's status as Jackson's best option down the field.
  • Zach Banner called his official Washington visit a "12," though he's probably been on a dozen or so unofficial visits to Montlake. Considering Sark's past success with in-state recruits, I'm guessing Banner commits to the Huskies. An upset over Baylor might be the guarantee clincher Sarkisian and the Huskies need to reel in Banner.

Seatowning: Slowing Down...

Written by Kevin Cacabelos on .

I'll be eating skittles to help me go Beastmode on my schoolwork.

Being in college means I have tests to study for these next two weeks. By December 16th, I'll be free though. The blog will probably slow down just a tad bit. See some Seattle sports links after the jump.

Seatowning 11/16/11: Jamal Crawford Garnering Interest From Chinese Team

@JCrossover has calmly stayed smart by not showing any favoritism in all the questions/tweets from fans about what NBA team he'll sign with once the lockout is over. I wonder if he'll address international signing speculation. ESPN is reporting that the Xinjiang Flying Tigers from China have interest in Jamal Crawford and are looking to sign him if the NBA season doesn't happen.

Seatowning: 10/26/11, Back In Action!

Written by Kevin Cacabelos on .

Wow. No link post since September 9th? I forgot what being busy was. Free time found its way into my life today, and I finally soldiered my way through all the stuff I've favorited on twitter and starred on Google Reader for the past month or so. I digress. Here are your links!

  • Former Seattle Prep stand-out Spencer Hawes is a must follow on Twitter for any Seattle basketball fan. Hawes is smart, funny and definitely not afraid to stand up for his conservative politics. The NBA lockout has kept the seven-footer in Seattle; he's been at a Prep football game, he's been working out with the other NBA Seattle-natives and he's been spotted at UW more than a couple of times. Here's a Twitter interview The Big Lead conducted with Hawes a couple of days ago.
  • Pineda for Joey Votto? I'd pull the trigger on that trade in a second. Forget about Prince Fielder. Here's the logic from USS Mariner
  • Rush The Court (required reading for all college basketball fans) put out its preview on Washington yesterday. While outsiders question on who will be the "go-to" guy this season, almost all Husky basketball fans have hyped up Terrence Ross to be the main guy. Think back when Nate Robinson declared early for the draft; the team was facing the same dilemma. Brandon Roy who only averaged 12 points in his junior season ended up filling Robinson's role as leader quite nicely. I'm not saying Ross will be an All-American, but I do think he'll emerge as the Huskies main option especially with Wroten and Gaddy willing to distribute the ball.
  • Deadspin writes about their love for Seattle Mariners Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre. I miss you Adrian.
  • Danny Kelly at SB Nation Seattle takes an insightful look at the Seahawks quarterback situation. You may not be happy with it, but it's best to understand why Tarvaris Jackson is team's starting QB before complaining.

Seatowning: We Need Your Questions!

Written by Kevin Cacabelos on .

We are starting a weekly mailbag column with Wait For It Seattle, and we need as many questions as possible. Mariners, Seahawks, Huskies, Pop Culture and anything else that comes to mind. Nothing is off-limits. Leave us a comment on this post with your questions! You'll be featured and credited in the post if your question is chosen.

  • Mariners 4, Royals 1 [box score]: Justin Smoak hit his first home run in 48 games and Ichiro also hit a lead off home run to help the Mariners beat the Royals. Jason Vargas put up good Jason Vargas numbers; he went six innings, allowed one run and struck out four. Brandon League notched his 34th save and is third in the AL in saves behind Jose Valverde and Mariano Rivera. Mariners 60-83, fourth place, 25 games back. Next game, Today vs. Kansas City, 7:10 p.m. PT.
  • Want an excuse to stay in on a Friday night? UWTV is announced yesterday that they will start a 10-part series called the "Greatest Moments at Husky Stadium." The show will premiere on September 16th and will air twice ever Friday night at 6:30 p.m. and again at 9 p.m.
  • Husky Head Coach Steve Sarkisian has been a "little bit on edge." Good. The Huskies look real serious going into this game. I expect a blowout.
  • Abdul Gaddy is officially 100%!

On TV/Radio: Mariners vs. Royals (7:10 p.m. PT, ROOT/710 ESPN), Storm vs. Phoenix (7:00 p.m. PT, KONG/1090)

Seatowning 9/7/11: Carp Named AL Rookie Of The Month

Written by Kevin Cacabelos on .

  • Mariners 2, Angels 1 [box score]: King Felix had his way against the Angels. Hernandez struck out seven and only surrendered four hits in eight innings pitched. The recently called-up Michael Saunders grounded into a fielder's choice in the fourth inning that scored Kyle Seager from third. Mariners 59-82, fourth place, 21 games back. Next game, Today at Los Angeles, 7:05 p.m. PT.
  • Mike Carp was named the American League Rookie of the Month yesterday. In my opinion, I think Carp has earned himself a permanent spot with the big league squad. Will he be this team's starting left fielder, first baseman, or designated hitter next season.
  • Italian phenom Alex Liddi is up with the big league club now. Liddi has great offensive potential, but Dave Cameron from USS Mariner doesn't think he's ready for the majors quite yet. He still has an inability to make contact at consistent rate, a skill required to succeed in the majors.
  • Grantland put out their NFL preview, reviewing every NFL team. They aren't high on the Seahawks or their quarterback situation. Tarvaris Jackson bashing seems like a common theme among those projecting the Seahawks for this upcoming season.
  • Skyline, Kentwood and Snohomish girls soccer teams are ranked in the top 15 of the the opening NSCAA west region rankings. View them here.

  • Mariners 2, Angels 1 [box score]: I'm savoring these moments to watch full M's games on TV while I'm in college in southern California. Today I was especially happy to watch King Felix pitch a complete game. I'm even happier that I rocked my yellow King's Court t-shirt all day today throughout the LMU campus. Go Mariners. Mariners 58-77, fourth place, 18 games back. Next game, Today vs. Los Angeles, 7:10 p.m. PT.

Seatowning: Hope Solo Starring In Dancing With The Stars!

Written by Kevin Cacabelos on .

  • Mariners 5, Angels 3 [box score]: Last night was a game that I want to see repeat over and over again next season. Ackley came through with three hits, Ichiro hit two doubles and Mike Carp hit the game-winning two-run home run in the eighth inning. Someone not named Felix Hernandez was pitching...and yet the Mariners were still able to beat their division rivals. Good hitting, good pitching. This is how you win games. Finish strong Mariners. Finish strong. Mariners 57-76, fourth place, 18 games back.Next game, Today vs. Los Angeles, 7:10 p.m. PT.
  • Any Coug fans that read this blog? Leave a comment and maybe we'll start giving love to the Zzu. This team is going to have a rough season. Watch out for Jeff Tuel though, he's easily one of the best QB's in this conference.
  • Washington's schedule comes in at No. 6 in this ranking of the toughest schedules in the Pac-12. Along with a trip to Nebraska in the non-conference, the Huskies have to face Oregon, USC (road) and Oregon St. consecutively before the Apple Cup.

  • Mariners 3, White Sox 9 [box score]: Jason Vargas surrendered 10 hits and nine earned runs against the White Sox. Tyler Flowers hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to cap off a six-run inning. The Mariners offense finally broke their 21 inning scoreless streak in the bottom of the eighth inning courtesy of a Josh Bard two-run home run. UPDATE Mariners 56-76, fourth place, 18.5 games back.
