Seatowning 5/21/11: Shawn Kemp Rejects Michael Jordan

Written by Kevin Cacabelos on .

The video is grainy, but you should be able to see the Reignman completely reject a shot attempt by the greatest player of all-time. Go Sonics.

  • NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell spoke with Seahawks season ticket holders yesterday in a conference call. He hinted at the low possibility of Seattle hosting the Super Bowl. He also said the league is looking for ways to eliminate the disadvantage West Coast teams face on early road game start times. I'm glad Goodell is taking time to talk directly to fans, but part of me wonders whether this is just a publicity stunt.
  • Jason Terry said yesterday he would pick the Huskies over the Wildcats now if Lute Olson was not at Arizona. Definitely not a shot at Sean Miller, but definitely a sign of respect towards one of the best coaches of all-time. Hopefully Terry continues to help other up-and-coming Seattle basketball talents.
  • Former Seattle Prep basketball star and current Minnesota Timberwolves player Martell Webster gave a speech at the "A PLUS 'Changing the Game' Breakfast." The main crux of the speech was revealing: "I was a freshman at Seattle Prep. I had a cumulative GPA of somewhere around 1.0. Prep was very supportive of me, but told me I needed to do my part. ... I needed to go to tutoring and then the ultimate sacrifice: I needed to go to summer school" As a former Seattle Prep graduate, I commend Webster for his efforts, because I know how tough that school is. Going from a 1.0 to graduating four years later probably required more sacrifice and perseverence than I could imagine.

  • Former UW president and now present NCAA president Mark Emmert has been receiving a lot of heat surrounding all the recent NCAA controversies. He does include a telling quote in the article, that I agreed with, but again the argument is much more complex: "What are you going to pay them? Are you going to pay the quarterback the same as the guy who sits on the bench? Are you going to pay a gymnast the same as a men's basketball player?" Emmert said. "There is a model for that, it's called professional sports, and I love them. But that's not what college sports is about."
  • The expansion of the Pac-10 into the Pac-12 was worth it, at least in financial terms. On the field and the court, I think it will be awhile until Colorado and Utah are competing with the top tier of teams in the conference.
  • I think it is weird that Ken Griffey Jr. tickles Ichiro. Is this a common practice across baseball? I think if the two had facebook profiles their relationship would be "it's complicated."
  • "Academic Sports Development" is putting on a offensive and defensive lineman camp this Saturday May 14, 2011 at Magnuson Park in Seattle. It is targeted towards football players in the grades 7 to 12. For $60, campers will receive coaching instruction on detailed fundamentals including footwork, hand placement, high level techniques, and "tricks of the trade." Head over to asdseattle.com to register.

  • UW football will have its game against Stanford on Saturday, October 22nd aired on ABC, ESPN, or ESPN2. Their game against USC on Saturday, November 26th could also be picked up by one station from the trio as well, depending on the circumstances. It can be assumed that the majority, if not all of the team's games will be on television in 2011.
  • The energetic Nate Robinson hurt himself during yesterday's warmups for the team that shalt not be named. He has two stiches above his left eye after receving a cut from diving for a ball during a 3 on 3 game during warmups. The guy has not seen any time on the court for his new team, and rightfully so, because no player from Seattle should have to play for the T*****. Go Sonics.
  • David Aardsma's right arm is acting up now. He now has a grade 2 sprain to his UCL. I'm not going to lie to you and tell you I know what that means. The Mariners could use his help in the bullpen, and there was some hope he'd be a valuable trade piece near the deadline. But both of these objectives seem unlikely with this new injury.
  • Good news: Derrick Williams, Klay Thompson, DeAngelo Casto, Nikola Vucevic, Jeremy Green, and Malcolm Lee are all headed to the NBA next season. Bad news: So is Isaiah Thomas. Here's a look at who will be the top players in the Pac-12 next season after the mass exodus of early entries from the Pac-10 to the NBA has just occured.

Seatowning 5/9/11

Written by Kevin Cacabelos on .

Today's links for 5/9/11--Last night Jason Terry tied the NBA playoff record for most three-pointers in a game with 9.

  • Here is a nice early outlook on what the college basketball landscape will look like after the draft deadline passed this weekend. Washington is not mentioned at all, which is a change from the past two seasons. Arizona is getting some early hype despite the departure of Derrick Williams. Gonzaga also checks in at No. 13 even though they lose Steven Gray to graduation.
  • Holy Names senior basketball player Erika Johnson was named to the Parade All-American team. Johnson is headed off to play for the California Bears next season. She led Holy Names to an undefeated championship winning season this past March.
  • A high school Track coach in Massachusetts was fired for letting his team run workouts shirtless. This is ridiculous. It is a senseless rule to follow, because sometimes it is simply too hot and difficult to train with a sweat-drenched shirt. [WickedLocal]
  • Here is a nice explanation on the value of base stealing and why some managers seldom let their players steal. In the end, the risk out weights the benefit, and in the long run, decreases a team's chances of putting runs on the board.

Seatowning 5/3/11

Written by Kevin Cacabelos on .

Today's links for 5/3/11: You can blame final exams for the lack of link roundups these past two weeks. I somehow have found time to read about sports, despite studying historical figures like Lansford Hastings. For those that don't know, Hastings decided to put together a guide on the Overland Trail, even though he never traveled the Overland Trail. Of course, some people used his guide, took one of his routes, and ended up stranded and having to eat each other to survive. I digress. Back to sports.

  • Greg Bishop from the New York Times wrote a nice piece on the Oklahoma City Thunder and Memphis Grizzlies Seattle Supersonics vs. Vancouver Grizzlies playoff series and what it means to NBA fans in the Northwest. If I ever meet "Cruncher14" in person, I'd love for him to meet my fist. Here's what this particular Thunder fan shared in the comments secion of the article, "I understand your loyalty to a team you supported. Just as NBA players learn that the NBA is a business and understand that players come and players go, you should understand that no city or region is entitled to an NBA team. Cities must deserve to keep their team. Seattle did not deserve to keep the team. The attendance and the revenue were not there. Oklahoma City deserves the team. The attendance, fan support and profits all show that this was the right move. It does not mean you have to be happy, but you should understand it and accept it."
  • The Pac-12 is close to finalizing a TV deal with either Comcast or FOX. I'm ambivalent about FOX, as I'd much rather see most football games on ABC or ESPN, but I am definitely skeptical of a Comcast deal. Versus would probably broadcast a lot of games if a deal is signed with Comcast--they've been sketchy and below average for the football games they've done so far.
  • High school sprint phenom Hannah Cunliffe quit Decatur track in favor for competing at the national level. The freshman currently holds the 54th best 100 meter time in the country according to the Athletic.net national leaderboard. I guess she has plenty of time to win state championships. Overall, it's probably a good decision, not to talk down to her team at all, but she is just on another level compared to her teammates. Both male and female.
  • Trent Dilfer says the Seahawks next quarterback could be Tavaris Jackson. I want Dilfer to be completely wrong. And I want Carson Palmer to be the next Seahawks quarterback.

Today's links for 4/23/11: Brian Mullan does not have a heart. I am sure of it.

  • Be sure to tune into the NBA playoffs tonight to watch the OKC Thunder vs. Denver Nuggets Sonicsgate crew. 7 p.m. on ESPN. Also, Kevin Durant is frustrated because he missed out on some tax write-offs.
  • Lorenzo Romar is desparate for a big man. Enter the 6'11" Jamaican, Vashil Fernandez. Sounds like Aziz N'Diaye 2.0 to me.
  • Lakeside hired Casey Selfridge as their new football head coach. Hopefully he can elevate that team's performance, but a small enrollment and the presence of schools like O'Dea, Seattle Prep, and Bishop Blanchet are always going to be roadblocks to building a successful football program at Lakeside.
  • Two different NFL schedules were released this past week. One for a season with no lockout. One for a season with a lockout. See the Seahawks' schedules here.

Seatowning 4/22/11

Today's links for 4/22/11: Brandon Roy led his team to victory last night. He's frustrated inside, but hopefully his knees get better and his spirits too...

  • Bud Selig is optimistic about expanding the playoffs to ten teams in 2012. This would increase the Mariners chances of getting into the playoffs. This would also reduce the importance of the regular season. I'm not optimistic.
  • The Huskies receiving corps are going to be good next season, especially with the arrival of Kasen Williams. Having good receivers will make it a lot easier for the whoever ends up starting at QB next season.
  • There is a new book out on Tyrone Willingham, and it does not look the least bit positive. I don't know if I'd be able to suffer through reading it. Good luck selling copies...
