Men’s basketball (1-4) had their share of highs and lows this week, as they went from losing by 16 to defeating a BCS conference school. The Redhawks started out the week by hosting Cal Poly in the home opener. The team struggled to hit the basket as they shot just 27% in a 76-60 loss. Freshman Sterling Carter continued to pace the team, as he hit for 24 points. Seattle U led with as little as 11 minutes remaining in regulation, but Cal Poly made back-to-back three pointers to take the lead and never looked back. The Redhawks came out just three days later against Oregon State looking for a bounce-back. The game was a rematch of Seattle U’s 99-48 demolishing of the Beavers in Corvallis just a year ago, and while this one was a lot closer, the result was the same as the Redhawks won an exciting 83-80 match. Cervante Burrell scored a career high 22 points to lead SU. The game was back and forth the whole way, with Seattle U fighting back from 12 down in the second half. Sterling Carter put together another 20 point performance, and the men fought for their first victory of the year. They will hit the road to Irvine, California this weekend for games against Louisiana Tech, Navy and UC Irvine.
Women’s basketball (0-2) had a rough week, as they lost their opening two games. In the home opener against Cal Poly, the women fell 74-57. The team fought hard for extended stretches, but the youth and inexperience proved too much for the Lady Hawks, as they were unable to beat Poly’s press defense and shot just 24% on the game. Salena Dickerson led the way with a 21 point, 11 rebound double-double. They rebounded and played a much tighter game against Cal State Fullerton, but ultimately fell 63-58. The game was never out of reach, but again, the young Redhawks were not able to climb over the hump and mount a comeback. Tatiana Heck led the way with 14 points, and freshman Kacie Sowell notched her first double-double. The Redhawks will travel this weekend to play UC Riverside and the University of San Diego.

Swimming hosted Simon Fraser last weekend. The women came out victorious 110-94, while the men were just barely edged 105-97. Alexis Morehouse, Kelsey Henan and Hayley Cobb won their individual events to help the women to victory. James Gilmore and Joe Wertz took both of the top spots in the 200 IM to keep the men in the competition. The swim team will take the next two weeks off in order to prepare for meets against the University of Utah and Brigham Young University.
