Men's Basketball (1-0) kicked off their 2010-11 season by hosting Pacific Lutheran University for an exhibition on Halloween.  The team played extremely well, shooting 60% from the floor on the way to a convincing 121-91 victory.  The scoring load was spread out, as six players hit double figures, with Mark McLaughlin leading the way with 25 points on 9 of 12 shooting.  Alex Jones was a bull in the post, drawing fouls from helpless defenders and going to the free throw line 10 times to score 15 points.  All 12 active players played at least 11 minutes for Coach Cameron Dollar.  The team plays again next on the road against the University of Maryland on November 8.

Women's basketball also kicks off their season this weekend.  The team plays host to Academy of Art on Saturday at 5 PM for an exhibition match.  Coach Joan Bonvicini looks to improve on last season's record in her second season with the team.  "Our returners have made strides in the offseason and we have several great newcomers. Overall we are much more athletic, faster and we have depth. We still have things we are going to need to work on, but we are much more improved from where we were last year," Bonvicini said.

Cross Country had a successful showing at the 2010 Great West Conference Championships last weekend.  Five Redhawks placed in the top 20 to lead the men to a second place finish, while the women, on the back of freshman Cara Talty, posted a fifth place finish.  Erik Barkhaus once again led the way, finishing third place to earn First Team All-Conference honors.  Kelton Sears and Matthew McClement, who finished eighth and 14th respectively, were named to the All-Conference Second Team.  Despite her youth, Talty continued to shoulder the load for the Redhawks' women as their top runner, finishing in seventh to earn First Team All-Conference honors.  The team now has some well-earned time off to prepare for the indoor track season.

Women's Golf competed in the Lamkin Grip Invitational at Cal Poly.  The team finished in a tie for 13th place following a 12 stroke improvement on the second day of the tournament.  Christine Cook shot a final round 79 to tie for 21st place and lead the Redhawks.  The tournament concluded the fall season for women's golf, but they will resume play in the spring.

Men's Soccer (4-10-3) had a rough Halloween weekend.  Seattle U fell to Air Force on Friday, 2-1.  The Redhawks were able to come back and tie the game 1-1 in the 56th minute thanks to Brady Ballew, but Air Force scored the go ahead goal in the 77th minute and didn't look back.  Despite the loss, there were several positives for the Redhawks, including an impressive 20 shots, four on goal.  The team looked to regroup against Denver, but were stymied 2-0 by a tough Pioneers team.  Ballew was again aggressive, and almost scored within Denver's box, but the shot deflected off the post.  Seattle U's home schedule is over, but they have one more game remaining against Cal State Bakersfield.

Women's Soccer (10-6-2) split their games during their California road trip.  Against Cal State Bakersfield, the Redhawks played a very exciting game, winning in the second overtime 1-0.  The game was marked by outstanding defense, as neither side scored through regular time.  Bakersfield managed just six shots on the game, with only two on goal.  Carlee Norquist's 106th minute golden goal sent Seattle U to victory, after a great set up by Emma Levy.  The team did not fair as well against Cal State Northridge, as the Redhawks were felled 3-1.  The Matadors scored in the first 10 minutes of the game to put Seattle U on the defensive, and they were not able to recover.  In addition to the action on the field, junior midfielder Lauren Munechika was named to the ESPN Academic All-District Third Team in recognition of her perfect cumulative 4.0 GPA.  Women's soccer, ranked 10th in the West Region, concludes its season this weekend, on Saturday against Cal State Bakersfield on Championship Field for senior night.   There will be a pancake feed before the game at noon for members of RedZone who show up in their shirts.

Volleyball (13-12) was off this week, but the team plays back-to-back matches at Cal State Bakersfield November 5 and 6.  In addition, senior setter Jamie Mellies, the school's all-time assists leader, was honored this week by being named to the ESPN Second Team Academic All-District Team after earning a 3.92 GPA while majoring in civil engineerings.  Mellies is averaging 10.46 assists per set, tops in the nation among independent schools.
