Editor's Note: Darren Woods will be writing games recaps from Jamal Crawford's Seattle Summer Pro-Am basketball league that features current and former professional and collegiate basketball stars from around the Seattle-area.
In game one in week three of the Seattle Summer Pro-Am, the Mavs looked hand Tony Wroten Jr. and the Sonics a loss. The Sonics would have to put up a fight without the help of Nate Robinson as he was unable to make the tournament this weekend.
The Mavs had their hands full from the beginning but controlled the tempo of the game early behind Carlos Singer's 6 of 6 shooting to open the first quarter. Added excitement ensued after each field goal as the crowd cheers became louder and the P.A. announcer began to count each made field goal over the mic. The Sonics kept their composure and even with Wroten on the bench for the better part of the second quarter they went into the halftime down just eight points 61-53. Singer had 20 points in the first half while Micah Downs of the Sonics led his squad with 18.
Within the first five minutes of the third quarter the Sonics turned the halftime deficit into a 61-60 lead. The Hawks however, got out of their early quarter funk and got on board as both teams rode their star players. Tony Wroten hit four three pointers in a row in the third and finished out the third quarter a scintillating 5-6 from the field. A contraversial foul call on a three pointer at the end of the third quarter gave Carlos Singer three free throws which he made and gave the Mavs a 98-79 lead. That would be all the Mavs would need as they stayed out front and claim the first win of the day 127-95.
Elvin Mims led the way for the Mavs in the second half and tallied 37 points on the day before all was said and done. Donald Watts had 35 and Carlos Singer finished with 31 as they rounded out the only other Mav players with more than 30 points.
The Sonics Tony Wroten Jr. led all scorers with 41 points while teammate Micah Downs had 20.
Game two of the day was arguably the best of the day as it pitted the Hawks vs. Bulls. The NBA's Jamal Crawford of the Atlanta Hawks and Isaiah Thomas of the Sacramento Kings joined forces and looked to stay unbeaten in the tournament. The Bulls, comprised of former University of Idaho and Renton High School standouts Rashaad Powell and Shawn Henderson looked to play the role of spoiler against the star studded NBA cast.
Neither team ran away with the game and Rashaad Powell turned the first half into a clinic and stepped up huge defensively and got his teammates involved. He led all scorers in the first half scoring as well, contributing 37 points. The Bulls ended the first half up 67-62.
In the second half the Hawks began to get frustrated as the Bulls offense was firing on all cylinders. Jamal Crawford began to get frustrated with calls from the referees. As the second half progressed the Bulls capitalizing on their opportunities led by as much as 11 with 5:27 to go in the fourth quarter before the Hawks forced two turnovers and Isaiah Thomas took a charge to pull within six. The Hawks couldn't sustain however as a Rashaad Powell three-pointer and two key Chris Sprinker free throws later the Bulls won in control 135-123.
Rashaad Powell had a game high 49 points in leading the bulls to the victory. Teammate Shawn Henderson had 24 in the win.
For the Hawks it was Jamal Crawford's 41 that kept his team close while the Tacoma native Isaiah Thomas notched 38.
The third and final game of the afternoon produced the biggest blowout of the game as well. The 76ers missed Terrence Williams dearly as they got dropped 133-103 by the Blazers.
Brandon Roy of the Portland Trailblazers looked on as his former UW teammate Tre Simmons did his best to keep the 76ers in it. The Blazers led by 18 at halftime on the shoulders of hot shooting Brian Johnson and former NBA player and big man Mike Dickerson.
The Blazers stretched the lead to 20 and kept it there consistently throughout the third quarter and settled on a 96-76 third quarter lead. Struggling to stay competitive in the fourth Tre Simmons and the 76ers began to turn the ball over and Dickerson of the Blazers had a couple of huge dunks to cap off the win.
