The Sounders are looking strong as they head into their third straight U.S. Open Cup final as they beat New England 2-1 in league play. After a long away series the Sounders arrived at Gillete Stadium to face the Revolution and finish the away series on a high note.
Early on in the match it appeared that that the Sounders would not be able to achieve that goal. Kasey Keller was the busier of the two goal keepers, having to save several high threat shots. In the 35th minute, the Revolution broke through off of a cross from Benny Feilhaber which was scored by 16-year old phenom, Diego Fagundez.
The Revolution’s lead did not hold however as a defensive lapse gave Fredy Montero to deftly loft a ball into New England’s net to tie the game in the 36th minute, just 66 seconds after New England had taken the lead. This immediate response seemed to jar the Revolution off their play as the Sounders took control.
In the 47th minute Montero completed his second straight brace, scoring off of a Nate Jaqua assist. Montero now stands at eleven goals for this season. The game remained competitive, but the Sounders kept the Revolution under thumb and improved to sixteen wins on the season and continue to display focus heading towards the playoffs.
If the Sounders maintain their poise it seems as though this could be a winning year for a city whose sports fans are ready for a title.
